Elf Crossing!
Did You Know: There is a Santa Claus Lane located in North Pole, Alaska? It is well known as a festive area located near Fairbanks. North Pole, AK is known for its holiday-themed attractions and is home to the famous Santa Claus House. The town attracts visitors during the holiday season who come to experience the magic of Christmas!
But as you can imagine, extreme cold and harsh weather can make it very challenging to manage the 18 miles of city roads.
A few issues that may land their infrastructure on the naughty list:
The North Pole is built on permafrost. This can make roads uneven and they may develop potholes that are both dangerous and pricey to repair.
The freeze-thaw cycle is common. This shift in temperature can cause pavement to crack.
They aren’t always dreaming of a White Christmas. Accumulation of ice and snow reduces traction. Then, de-icing can also accelerate the corrosion of bridges and guardrails.
Designing infrastructure with climate-resilient materials and incorporating adaptive strategies for thawing permafrost will be key to maintaining jolly roads in the future! ❄️
