LTRC Training & Delivery of an all-new ICC SFT XR

Largo, FL – Team members from the Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) completed training and took delivery of an all-new ICC Safety Friction Tester (SFT). The Extended Range (XR) chassis, and its almost 1,000-gallon water tank, can conduct 3 times as much testing before a water refill is needed!  Meeting various ASTM and AASHTO industry standards, ICC’s SFTs provide a safe, efficient, and reliable method of measuring either network or project level surface friction on existing and new surfaces for roads, bridges, crosswalks and patterned pavements.

Tyson Rupnow, Ph.D, P.E., Associate Director of Research at LTRC, commented on the new equipment, “The Louisiana Transportation Research Center utilizes surface friction tester for a wide variety of research and technical assistance projects.  Its use will be incorporated in an ongoing aggregate friction study as well as evaluation of various surface treatments the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) are currently utilizing.  Additionally, the surface friction tester will be used by the Department in evaluation of high crash incidence areas where surface friction is suspect.”

The FHWA has provide technical advice and guidance on the importance of friction and skid resistance since 1980.  ICC has engineered and built equipment in-house at our Florida facility; ICC SFTs have been providing dependable surface friction measurement since 1975!
